While the company’s software, Android, powers millions of phones worldwide, Google revealed Tuesday night a line of smartphones called Pixel, the first smartphone that is purely ‘Made by Google’, both software and hardware components.

The phone’s release comes as Apple’s iPhone sales are declining for the first time while Samsung is facing a fallout from an embarrassing recall of millions of defective Galaxy Note 7 phones due to reports of exploding batteries.

The size is about the same as its rival Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy. Pixel comes in two sizes, 5-inch (regular) or 5.5-inch (XL), and available in three colors: Very Silver, Quite Black and Really Blue (the limited edition for the U.S. only, now sold out). The Pixel and Pixel XL phones come with aerospace-grade aluminium body and include a rear glass panel with 2.5D Gorilla Glass 4 screen protection against accidental damage.

It also features a 12.3MP premium camera, a fingerprint scanner at the back, and a long battery life that can charge the 2,770mAh battery in just 15 minutes for a 7-hour usage.

The camera app offers a number of smart features like “Smartburst”, which takes a rapid-fire series of shots then automatically picks the best ones, and “Lens Blur” to achieve shallow depth of field and bokeh effects (Wow).

The company included a digital assistant software called “Google Assistant,” similar to Apple’s Siri but the notable difference is that it is powered by Google’s search engine with conversational AI, so it can respond to queries and do more complicated tasks.

Unlike Apple iPhone 7, both Pixel phones have a headphone jack, so wired headphone fans can be very thankful to it (at least for now). But sadly, the Pixel phones are not waterproof or dustproof yet, something added feature on most flagship Android phones (hopefully in the next version).

Pixel ships with the latest Android OS called Android 7.1 Nougat. Phones will get software and security updates as soon as they’re available, it can be downloaded and installed straight from Google. The phone’s price starts at $649, it’s available for pre-order now.
