DAVAO CITY, Philippines – An explosion shocked Davao City night market on Friday night September 2, 2016. As of this writing, 14 were confirmed dead and 60 others were injured according to Chief Superintendent Manuel Gaerlan of Philippine National Police (PNP). Wounded were rushed to the hospitals and the police are investigating the cause of the explosion.
The PNP chief said Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte, whose hometown is Davao City, was heading to the explosion site. The night market is a popular place to be on for many people who want to hang out for great food and finds.
Davao City was on high alert, with police checkpoints set up throughout the city, officials said.
Presidential spokesman Martin Andanar mentioned the possible involvement of the Islamist militant Abu Sayyaf group or drug lords, according to ABS-CBN.
